Certainly one of the most impressive Courthouses in Ohio is one located in the county seat of Clinton, Wilmington. Architecturally unlike most others in the state, it is distinguished by a dome instead of a clock tower. Resembling much the style of the Capitol of the United States prior to the addition in the Civil War period of the House and Senate wings, the Federal style structure and beautifully landscaped grounds make it one of Ohio's most beautiful Courthouses.

Population of the county in 1810 was 2,674, settlement having begun as early as 1797. Pioneers mostly from PA, VA, KY and NC.

Political factors have had many effects on Clinton County history. The irregularly shaped townships and smaller subdivisions - so different from the rectangular system in the northern part of the state, indicate the VA origins of the land system.
