Voter Registration

To register to vote you must complete a voter registration form and mail or deliver it to the Board of Elections. Registrations must be received at least thirty days prior to the election in which you first wish to vote.

Do I have to be registered in order to vote?

Yes, except for members of the armed forces serving on active duty. Their spouses and dependents are also exempt if they left Ohio to be near the service member.

Do I declare my politics when I register?

No. Under Ohio law, the ballot you vote in a primary election determines your party affiliation.

How is residence determined?

Changing your Address:

If you have moved from your current place of residence, you must report that change in writing to the Union County Board of Elections.

Example One: Moving within Union County.*
If you are already living in and registered in Union County and you move to another location in Union County, you must submit a written notification to the Union County Board of Elections. This can be done by providing our office with the following information:
    1) Voter’s name
    2) Voter’s address
    3) The current date
    4) Voter’s date of birth
    5) Voter must provide one of the following:
      a) Voter’s driver license number
      b) Last four digits of the voter’s social security number

c)

A copy of the voter’s current and valid photo Id, a copy of a military id that shows the voter’s name and current address, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows voter’s name and current address.
    6) Voter’s signature

An official form is not required as long as the information above is provided. However, we prefer a voter registration form be used to change your address. Changing your address can not be done over the phone.

Example Two: Moving into Union County.

You must re-register to vote if you move into Union County. You are considered a new registration even if you already have been registered in Ohio or any other state. If you provide our office with your previous Ohio address, we will notify your former voting district to cancel your old registration.

Example Three: Moving out of Union County.

You must re-register with your new county’s board of election by mail or in person. You will be considered a new registration in your new county or state. The new voting district (if in Ohio) will notify our office of your new residence and you will be removed from Union County’s voting list

* Remember it does not matter if you move across the street, across town or across county; you must register any change in your place of residence. This is true even if you change apartment or lot number. Also remember that a post office box can be part of your address, but your voting location is determined by your street address and thus must be included in any address change. By providing our office with both street and post office box, you can be assured of our accuracy in processing your registration.

Change of Name:

To register a change of name with the Board of Elections, you will need to submit a written request or come into the board of elections office. The written request must include the following information:

    1) Voter’s name
    2) Voter’s address
    3) The current date
    4) Voter’s date of birth
    5) Voter must provide one of the following:
      a) Voter’s driver license number
      b) Last four digits of the voter’s social security number

c)

A copy of the voter’s current and valid photo Id, a copy of a military id that shows the voter’s name and current address, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows voter’s name and current address.
    6) Voter’s signature

* Voters that do not change their names by the 30th day before an election must vote a provisional ballot.
